Online Grifting is Not So Different

Internet marketing is in fact an ideal medium for online grifters to operate because, as in real life, grifters exploit human qualities such as greed, honesty, compassion, naivete to essentially defraud their marks. To be a success the online grifter needs to create sufficient social proof or good faith that what they are selling is genuine.

I’m not going to expose anyone in particular but I am going to demonstrate common grifts used in the Article Marketing sub niche of Internet Marketing.

Article Marketing is especially affected by this blight because of the ability to demonstrate apparent success with free tools and use of these tools in ways that their marks typically don’t know exist.

The common tool for these grifts is Google. Yes that’s right, grifters use the good  name of Google and people’s familiarity with Google to demonstrate their online success of their new secret method to Article Marketing Success.

How Google Search Differences  Seem to Affect Article Marketing Results

To be sure we dont fall victim to one of these grifters we need to understand how to use Google and why Internet Marketers use Article Marketing.

Article Marketing is the writing of articles about a particular Niche that the marketers are promoting and then submitting these  articles to multiple article directories. When submitting to these article directories it is possible to include 1 or more back link to the marketers ‘money site’.

The theory of Article Marketing is that by publishing a large number of articles with these back links embedded that the Page Rank of the author’s ‘money site’ will increase in Google as a result of the sheer quantity of back links creating more traffic. Additionally the theory of Article Marketing assumes that these articles will provide a top SERP (Search Engine Page Ranking) for the author’s targeted keywords, further adding to the possibility of increased traffic to the authors website, for free.

What many internet users do not know is that Google’s Search result can change depending on a number of factors including the syntax of the search as well as the conditions of the search.

For this example I will use the keywords article marketing reviews as I operate a website in the Article Marketing Niche and have targeted these keywords so I can provide real life, current examples of the different approaches and results. So lets start with the Search Input page for Google.

Google is Used By Online Grifters

Typically when a user searchers they enter a word or a phrase that relates to what they are looking for. This is typically typed directly into the search text field and enter or the search button is pressed.

This is called a basic search or what I call a ‘broad search’. The number of results returned are usually the highest using this basic broad searching technique and this is how most searchers use Google.

Being able to rank # 1 in a broad search or at a very minimum in the Top 10 on the 1st page of results is highly desired by anyone marketing on the internet and to be able to achieve that ranking by using Article Marketing for free is the penultimate achievement.

Marketers can spend many $1,000′s of dollars in advertising or SEO ( Search Engine Optimisation) to get listed in the top  spot for their target keywords.

A second approach is to use ‘In Title’ searching, whereby the searcher encloses their search word or phrase in double quote such as “Article marketing reviews”. The number of results that Google returns for these targeted searches are typically much less as Google is searching only for pages with that exact term.

Another way users search for information is whilst they are logged into their Google accounts such as Gmail or iGoogle (essentially the same portal with different functions). If the searcher then uses either a broad search or an In Title search the results returned will differ from when they are not logged into their account.

The amount of differentiation varies depending on the both the search phrase as well as how much information Google has collected about that searcher whilst they have been using Google and Google’s portal services.

In the broad search the number of documents found was 78million plus. On this broad search page my website http://www.articlemarketing-reviews.com ranks at number 2 with a double listing that includes my blog which forms part of my site too.

• Additionally my articles, Article Marketing Review – Part 3 – Evil Genius or Marketing Mastermind as published at ezinearticles.com ranks at Number 3 ( or 4 ) as part of a double listing.
• I also have my articles Article Marketing Review – Part 5: So Many Reviews So Little Time and part 3 Evil Genius again ranked as  Number 4 & 5 as part of a double listing for the articles that are published on articlesnatch.com

Incidentally these results a have been achieved by use of Article Marketing only and some sensible and free wordpress SEO techniques.

In Title Search (Exact Match)

• If we take a look at the exact match image , firstly note that we have now only returned just over 1 million results.
• On that 1st page results my website ranks at number 2 & 3 as part of a double listing.
• 2 of my article listed at Number 3 or 4 and 5 or 6 for the articles published at a1articles.com and articlealley.com respectively. (Article Marketing Reviews – Part 2: Why Honest Content Wins More Readers)

Logged Into Gmail

• Finally, when logged into my GMail account the number of search results as a broad search are the same.
• The main difference with this SERP is that not only is my first article ranked as #1 top position above ezinearticles.com, my other articles and my website/BLOG own the Top 5 results on that page.
• Not only do I get the Top 5 listing but I also receive 2 double listings with the ability to expand the results for more results form those pages too.

You can see I am logged into my Gmail account by the top right of the image.

Common Article Marketing Grifts

The reasons I have spent time with the set-up above is to demonstrate exactly what the online grifters will present as social proof of the success of their methods. You can now see why they do.

And whilst I am clearly happy with my results from all 3 search techniques for my articles and website, it is precisely these search techniques that grifters publish screen shots of to convince uneducated or unawares internet marketers that their “great new course” or “2 day seminar” is worth the asking price.

It’s a long grift but a grift nonetheless.

As social proof they publish screen-shot of In Title searches for some obscure search term for a common niche or provide video of them searching for their keywords whilst logged into their GMail portal.

You can see as I have demonstrated above that these are not representative of reality!

For example if I perform a search for a niche keyword phrase “how to make money selling light sabers” or similar obscure term AND I have written an article or 2 about this I will have my articles ranked in the top positions. Easy!

BUT if you look to the number of returned results you will note that there are typically only a few hundred or a few thousand at most.

Article Marketing is an effective way to generate free traffic but if you keywords or article titles are so obscure and your search results are so insignificant the propensity for any traffic whatsoever is remote at best.

1. Having your website and your articles simultaneously ranking in the top 10 results for a search terms returning almost 80 million results is not a grift.
2. Convincing unsuspecting suckers that your 3 day down-loadable video course about making money from selling Bill Gates look-alike eye-glasses is ranked #1 in Google from 10 returned results is a massive grift.

The danger with Internet Marketing is that it can totally consume your mind body and soul – an obsession. If there is any quicker way to ruin your life it is to become obsessed…with anything.

I’m not suggesting you don’t need to be focused and invest time and commitment in your Internet Marketing business.

I’m talking about an overriding obsession when you forget to eat and sleep, when your every waking moment is spent thinking about up sell, down sell, squeeze pages, opt in list, list building, SEO, CPA, CPC, articles, viral marketing, affiliate programs……!

But guess what, that’s what everyone else who is serious about creating a genuine Internet Marketing  business is thinking about as well….but  if you were to talk to the guys at the top of the industry would their story be any different?

I think so and it’s not because their not committed or haven’t been, at some time, obsessed with their business, it’s because they have discovered how to increase their effectiveness online and thereby reduce the amount of time they have to spend on it.

Now they can probably travel, spend more time with their family, buy their new cars and houses…and if they want to, log in anytime from anyplace to interact with their business in real time.

Internet Marketing Ruined My Life

The belief is that if you’re not “on

all time” then surely your competition is going to get that sale, build their list faster and bigger, find the next big thing before you do and everybody is going to be doing it!

If you don’t want Internet Marketing to Ruin your Life you must use those resources made available to you online to manage  and plan your time.

1. You must use these resources to automate your processes.
2. You must use these resources to outdo your competition so you don’t have to obsessively micro manage.

Instead you can enrich it in anyway you choose because you’ll have the freedom and choice that you desired when you started out.

If you’re too cheap to buy that latest, proven, list building product, or attend that industry expert seminar, or  utilise other systems to automate and systemize your daily efforts then how can you expect to succeed?

Especially if your competition is engaging completely!

Remember that job or traditional business you work in everyday now?

…don’t you use the best tools you can, attend industry expert seminars to discover new markets, new ideas and new processes for growth, don’t you use tools to automate daily repetitive processes?

So why wouldn’t you invest in the same tools for your own Internet Marketing  business? you should have no less focus or commitment  just because you run it from your PC at home.

The headlines read “Anybody Can Do This…” or “Follow our easy steps. Easy System, My 12 Year Old daughter can do this..” and so on.

I think that whilst this is not necessarily misleading it provides some a false hope that they will be able to get up and running and be successful right away without any additional knowledge or experience.

Internet Marketing? Then Consider this…

Why do so many people go to university and get their degrees and MBA’s and alike and why is it assumed for Internet Marketing that you can buy a course for “…just the cost of shipping and handling”  or “$47, $97, $147, $197″ and make thousands online…immediately?

An MBA can take anywhere from 1 to 4 years to complete and then you need market experience to ensure the information you have learnt is still current!

I do believe Internet Marketing is different from traditional marketing and represents a multitude of opportunities and that you can “learn by doing” more so than in traditional marketing.

However to think that the learning curve in Internet Marketing is any less steep than for any other professional endeavour is in my opinion naïve in the extreme.

To believe that a single product can provide you a life long stream of passive income for $47 is not only deceiving yourself but more importantly setting yourself up for severe disappointment and ultimately failure.

You must  first understand the core principles of buyer behaviour,  4P’s, psychology, post purchase dissonance and all of these marketing concepts to really bond and connect and communicate effectively with your customers.

Whether you have your own product for sale or you are choosing to be an Affiliate Marketer, without an understanding of how and why customers actually buy and how to manage their emotional condition  after the purchase, your success will certainly be limited if evident at all.

Now you’re asking “ I’m in Internet Marketing, What do I do then?”

Well the answer is the same for any business. You must be committed and put in the time to learn how to be the best at your chosen Niche in Internet Marketing.

Are you going to concentrate on Affiliate Marketing? Are you going to concentrate of developing and selling your own products via Joint Ventures? Are you going to be the Viral Marketing King and build a bigger Double Opt In List than any other Internet Marketer in history?

Whatever your goal the answer is the same in Internet Marketing…

  Yes you should purchase some educational video courses and look at working in a community or Internet Marketing incubator.

• Yes you should download those e-books and ‘how to guides’ for free.

• Yes you should learn by doing and practice your skills online.

• Yes you need to put in the hours, commit the time, set a goal for success…just as you should for any endeavour you are committed to.

Are there those in Internet Marketing today that were successful without this education?

To be sure but I would suggest they are an exception rather than then norm in the Internet Marketing universe. Can you be an exception? Perhaps, but why not start out along the path of ‘learning by doing’ and ongoing education and make the most of the opportunities Internet Marketing offers each day

Maybe then you’ll be surprised at how quickly you become an ‘overnight success’  and realise how much you simply did not know when you started out with Internet Marketing.

Internet Marketing Leverage?

Given that this is Internet Marketing, using computers (essentially a massive number cruncher), why then do so many people still try and do so many of their daily tasks manually and not try and learn from Internet Marketing Incubators or JV partners how they do it?

If ever there was a business that was made for implementation of  systemic processes (repeatable systems and processes) to Leverage your  time and increase results, then its Internet Marketing.

Your primary tools, the personal computer (or MAC),  have been developed specifically to make these Internet Marketing Leveraging task light work. And the tens of thousands of software tools to run on these millions of computers to automate these processes for humans  abound.

Internet Marketing Automation

Why then are people, Internet Marketers in particular, not automating and implementing systemic processes in those areas and instead trying to manually achieve the same results?

I would say that the most successful people in Internet Marketing have and they know the secret of Leverage already.

Time is the only resource that you can never get back once it’s gone, its not recyclable…Read that again

Once you truly understand this you would never say no to another genuine offer for a tool that can seriously improve your speed to market, multiply your ability to duplicate results (sales, list building, keyword generation, traffic campaigns etc.) or simply automate some of those processes you do every day.

If you really want a passive income and want to stop working in your business, instead of working on your business, you have to provide your computers…and your staff repeatable processes and the right tools to enable the correct processes to happen time and time again, without error precisely as you determine.

Once you do, your time will become even more precious because you’ll realise how much of it you’ve already wasted with your Internet Marketing to-date.
